Precon: Improve performance with DAX and Power BI

When you create a Power BI report, you might hit some performance issues when you have a large amount of data, or complex data models, or complex DAX expression in your measures. The first goal of this tutorial is to discover possible bottlenecks analyzing the execution of DAX calculations using tools such as DAX Studio and VertiPaq Analyzer. You will see how to capture and read the most important information from a DAX query plan. With this knowledge, the next step is to evaluate different strategies to improve the query performance. During this training, you will learn the most common patterns that could have performance issues and what are possible workarounds to solve them.

The training is delivered as a seminar, and the content is very dense. You can try the same techniques on your notebook during the course, but you should consider getting notes during the seminar and practice later.

The goal is to optimize the report execution, and not the refresh time. Thus, this training only considers the performance of DAX expressions, and does not cover performance of refresh operation that are related to M code in Query Editor.

The examples are provided using Power BI, but the concept of this training can be applied also to Power Pivot, Analysis Services Tabular, and Azure Analysis Services.

Alberto Ferrari
Alberto started working with SQL Server in 2000 and immediately focused his interest in the Business Intelligence area. He and Marco Russo created www.sqlbi.com, the website where they publish their thoughts and topics about BI. He published several books about SSAS Tabular, Multidimensional and Power Pivot. He is a Microsoft MVP and he achieved the SSAS Maestro title, the highest level of certification on Microsoft SSAS technology. Today, his main activities are in the delivery of DAX, and SSAS Tabular workshops all around the world, consulting on large and complex data warehouses, to provide assessments and validation of project analysis or to perform specific problem-solving activities. He is a well-known speaker at many international conferences, like SQL PASS, SQL Bits, Teched and he loves to be on the stage both at large events and at smaller user groups meetings, exchanging ideas with other SQL and BI fans. When traveling for work, he likes to engage with local user group to provide evening sessions about his favorite topics. Thus, you can easily meet him by looking at local Power BI user groups during the scheduled courses.
